Subtonic

Subtonic are a 3- piece from Staffordshire, Daniel Lea (vocals /guitar), Mark Ferris (vocals/bass) and Paul Byrne (drums).

Subtonic formed in 1999, although Daniel and Mark first began writing songs over ten years ago whilst still at school. They soon discovered that they had different singing voices, but as both were good enough to front a band they decided they would both sing lead vocals. Both vocalists also have their own distinctive style of playing their guitars, which they attribute to being self-taught, the pair not seeing any point in learning to play like somebody else.

Paul Byrne has played drums since a very early age where he quickly proved a natural and has gone onto become a formidable drummer. Since joining Subtonic he has turned his hand to piano and guitar which has lead to him becoming a songwriter for the band. Usually, Paul will write the main backbone of a song, which all three will flesh out together with any additional lyrics or music required. This writing process means that three individual sets of ideas and influences are filtered down to one finished song, a process the band see as a form of quality control.

Subtonic have mainly played gigs in London and the Midlands, their favorite venues being the 100 club on Oxford St and the Barfly in Camden where they have consistently impressed with their powerful live shows. This energy, coupled with their quality songwriting and the fact they have learned their instruments on their own terms may explain their individual sound and style and why when asked who they sound like, the only answer is "Subtonic".
