the online live music gig guide for birmingham & the midlands

Bellowhead

With the exception of The Who, Bellowhead are surely the best live band in the country’ – The Independent
‘Wild, joyous, perverse, bold, crazed, full-blooded, intricate, fearless, funny, epic and mostly BIG. Best live band we have. No contest’ – fRoots
‘A party for young & old alike’ – The Mirror

Despite having walked off with BEST LIVE BAND at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards an unparalleled four times, Bellowhead are clearly a band with considerable boundary-crossing appeal. The 11 piece, who play more than 25 instruments between them (from Helicon to frying pan) and seamlessly merge English folk, world, jazz, rock and music-hall influences are one of the few bands performing today who can dart effortlessly between the establishment and the fringes.

The past six years have seen this unique big band progress from being a group of friends whose main ambition was simply to ‘have fun at festivals’ to recording two acclaimed albums (Burlesque, Matachin), performing at the BBC Proms in front of an audience of 40,000, appearing on everything from BBC Four to BBC Breakfast TV and everywhere from The Big Chill to The Royal Albert Hall. Following in the footsteps of chart-toppers, St Etienne, Bellowhead have become Band in Residence at London’s Southbank Centre where they appear regularly to sell out ‘themed’ shows, including an alternative Valentine’s Night and New Year’s Eve Extravaganza. They have also released a DVD, undertaken major tours of the UK and North America. Bellowhead’s latest album,
‘Hedonism’ was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and was produced by the legendary John Leckie (Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Paul McCartney etc). It is due for release by Navigator Records on 4th Oct 2010.
