Born Too Late started in autumn 2005 with James Player(Vocals/Lead Guitar) and Ben Potts(Drummer), who were introduced through a mutual friend. They spent a few months playing a handful of their favourite songs then began to write some of their own material, which was predominantly of a Metal persuasion.
Still in need of a second guitarist and Bassist, they began the search to complete their band. They first turned to band member finder sites, but after a series of no shows and bad auditions, James invited Joe(Rhythm Guitar), a friend from secondary school and college, and a then budding guitarist, to a practice session. After a second practice session, he was 'hired', despite not being officially told so until a week or so after that. They then turned to a slightly more punk sound, and so ended 2005.
Then came the tricky part, finding a Bassist. Bassists are slim on the ground at the best of times, and competition seemed fierce. Many bassists contacted were also auditioning with other bands at the same time, and those who weren't were real arseholes. After a couple of months of searching and occasional high hopes, BTL were at the end of their tether, and in early February 2006, resorted to last ditch attempt. They were going to take someone with no previous guitar experience, interested in learning bass, and teach them from scratch. Big leap of faith. And so Ant(Bassist), a friend of both James' and Joe's from college, was taken under their wing and taught the bass lines to their originals and covers, in the hopes that this drastic measure wouldn't slow them down too much.
The drastic decision of a DIY bassist had caused the bands initial aim of playing a gig by the end of february to be put on hold for the foreseable future. But just 7 weeks after their target date they played their first gig, on the 18th of April, 2006, at The Actress and Bishop in Birmingham. They headlined the night, with Scarlet Siren opening. They were however followed by a table-top magician, who didn't do a bad job considering he was being surrounded and heckled by unruly drunk teenagers.
May 2006, and BTL are working on more material for the next few gigs in and around Birmingham. And with higher ambitions than ever.
