Band Info

London/Kent-based band, The Lies And How We Told Them are a four-piece fusion of indie, progressive and experimental rock. ‘Kooky German’ frontman Robert Raths is so dedicated to the cause that he has replaced his head with a functional tv set on stage. It seems the only way to get our attention nowadays; outside of our homes. „As we follow the one who sparkles the most, we are nothing but moths turning to ghosts... go! go! ghosts!“

‘An up and coming British band. With a sound that echoes Radiohead, Sigur Rós, Jeff Buckley and a bit of Arcade Fire, the band surge with emotional energy. With characteristic vocals and a wonderfully lush production this band will definitely be one to watch in the coming months.’ – Rough Trade

‘Whilst hanging precariously off a cliff by a line of thread, The Lies And How We Told Them delicately catch a breeze that carries them away with their emotive pop songs that adopt a tone similar to Engineers, Verve and Jeff Buckley.’ – 93 Records

While the media misinforms, misses marks and makes makeshift labels, The Lies And How We Told Them decided to make their own constitutions and render misgivings meaningless. ‘Kooky German’ Robert Raths joined Ricky Whybrow, his brother Ryan Whybrow and neighbour Declan Ferguson in autumn 2OO4. Before the year was out they captured their first songs on tape, and shortly after moved into the vacant house of the brothers' grandfather.
Without giving themselves any restrictions producing extremes and contrasts, they kept on recording more experimental material in the catacombs of South London's railroad system.
Whilst most of The Lies’ only fully reveal themselves after a few listens, the title track of their debut EP Signpost, rapidly has become a sing-along throughout the band's regular live shows and has already enjoyed airplay on BBC Radio after winning the Mick Jagger Centre Unsigned Competition in winter 2OO5.

Signpost EP {review.}

The seven track EP ‘Signpost’ tackles thoughts unheard of in ways only dreamed of by every artist in what must be the most professional sounding debut produced by an unsigned band. Broken TV, the opening track, is combined of emotive clashes and muted comedowns, reminiscent of Pink Floyd and 1997 Radiohead, carrying the same impact. The most memorable song besides the title track is probably Granite Hands, again with a unique name that you're unlikely to forget, blasting in with a strong guitar riff and bursting from the seams with passion and energy. I can say without doubt that this is one EP you should definitely invest in, as it will last for decades to come. – Salvo Magazine {Issue #6 2006}

Signpost UK/GER Tour 2006

The band spent most of 2OO6 touring the South East and every single borough of London, only interrupted by a short but very successful promo tour in Germany. The Lies And How We Told Them made the front page in every town on their route, followed by an overwhelming turn up at every show and Signpost hitting the listener’s charts of local radio stations.

Back in Britain, they all of a sudden found themselves headlining legendary club nights in London, like the Transmission at the Camden Barfly. The four are now recording their forthcoming “Escape! Escape!” EP, before they will go on their extensive Erased Tapes UK Tour in February 2OO7.
