Widely proclaimed as the most exciting alto saxophonist of his generation and British Jazz's Great Hope, Kinch has successfully woven post-bop Jazz and rap to near universal acclaim. He twice won the MOBO prize for Best Jazz act, plus a host of other plaudits including a Mercury Prize nomination for his debut album Conversations with the Unseen. Kinch is a rare beast in British Jazz - a fervent disciple of Hip Hop who is at the same time a master of the jazz idiom -both disciplines which he appears determined to bridge. On stage he is a confident, electrifying modern day hipster. Off stage and on record, the Oxford University graduate brings intellectual heft to his musical passions, refusing to separate the music from the social realities that give it birth. His second album, 'A Life in the Day of B19 - Tales of the Tower Block' examines the lived experiences of three Birmingham men. The multi award winning MC and cohort of Jazz royalty Wynton Marsalis and Courtney Pine is also creative director of The Live Box.
Situated in the South Birmingham suburb of Kings Heath, the Hare and Hounds has been around since 1820, but has stood in its present form since 1907. This, along with the beautiful and unique Art Nouveau tiles that line the entry hall and staircase, is a major contributing factor to its current Grade II listed status.
Although playing host to local Birmingham legends UB4Oís first ever gig in 1979 (recently commemorated by a PRS Music Heritage award and plaque), it is only in the past 7 years that itís really established itself as one of the most important and influential music venues in the country, playing a vital part in nurturing the cityís vibrant music and creative community.
The pub boasts two downstairs bars which host regular food evenings, a pub quiz and weekend DJs whilst the two upstairs venues feature live music & club nights spanning jazz, indie, funk, reggae, hip hop, soul, house, DíníB & comedy most nights of the week.
Local & National promoters who present shows at the Hare & Hounds include Leftfoot, This Is Tmrw, Birmingham Promoters, Metropolis Music, SJM, AEG, Kililive, Live Nation, Glasswerk, World Unlimited, Cosmic American, Capsule (Supersonic Festival), Moseley Folk Festival, Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival and many moreÖ
